Sustainability principles and eco-ethics
Villa Electra is a small-scale business οn the beautiful island of Halki. It has been recently and extensively renovated, according to the principles of sustainability, keeping and enhancing its traditional elements, with respect to the local stone-built island architecture and its natural environment.
Since the beginning, one of the main commitments has been the decrease of its environmental footprint and increase of the sustainability of its facilities and services by investing in sustainable practices, collaborating to this effect with guests, local authorities, and suppliers. The main aim is to adopt all these small changes that contribute to an eco-friendly development in the tourism sector, in a smaller or bigger scale.
Villa Electra confirms its commitment to the following practices, as part of its Green environmental management:
Energy consumption: Cooling/ heating systems, lights and electric appliances, use electricity from 100% sustainable, environmentally friendly resources, as the Villa participates in the Greek-eco community program of the island, getting electricity from the local solar park (ChalkiOn). All appliances comply with the highest efficiency rating, the lighting system consists of either LED (indoors) or solar (outdoors) lights with motion detectors and the hot water tank is centrally adjusted with a heating timer. Lastly, the Villa is under a big long-term insulation maintenance project (walls, openings, and roof) to ensure the least possible energy losses.
Water consumption: Halki’s water comes from a water desalination system – therefore it’s very precious. Guests are encouraged to use water wisely, and special signs are in place urging mindful use. A professional dosing system is installed in all bathrooms, regulating the flow of water. Moreover, all plants and flowers in pots are cactuses or other local succulents that need minimum to zero watering and water consumption is closely monitored.
Zero waste principles - Waste management system and recycling: Household waste is sorted and recycled accordingly, as waste reduction is the major objective. The Villa strongly discourages the use of disposable plastic and takes steps to this effect. For example, instead of plastic water bottles, there is a refillable filter water jug; instead of individual toiletries there are refillable shower products; instead of single use plastic bags there are cotton shopping bags and biodegradable waste bags. Zero waste principles also apply to the re-purposing and re-using of all antique original furniture and decorative items.
Ethical dimension: All provided products (e.g. linens, towels, toiletries) are ethically sourced and produced with environmental and social responsibility in Greece to support the local economy and decrease their carbon footprint. All edible products offered in the “welcome basket” are organic and either bought by certified local producers (e.g. wine, olive oil, traditional sweets, herbs) or homemade (e.g. jams).
Eco - friendly cleaning and maintenance products: Our establishment is kept spotlessly clean to the highest of standards using eco-friendly products and detergents without toxic substances that are harmful to the environment.
